BAGUIO CITY, Philippines - The Igorot people are one of the indigenous groups in the Philippines who have faced challenges in preserving their cultural heritage. The influence of modernization and lack of recognition from the government and the general public are among the factors that have threatened the preservation of Igorot culture. According to a study by Sagada et al. (2020), the Igorot people have been marginalized, neglected, and misrepresented in national discourse, which contributes to the difficulties in preserving their cultural heritage.

The lack of recognition and representation of the Igorot people in national discourse is a significant challenge to preserving their cultural heritage. In the study by Sagada et al. (2020), it was found that the Igorot people are often underrepresented or misrepresented in national media, education, and politics. This lack of representation can lead to the erasure or distortion of Igorot culture, making it difficult for future generations to understand and appreciate their cultural heritage. Moreover, the lack of recognition and representation of the Igorot people can lead to the neglect of their cultural heritage by the government and the wider society, as it is not given the attention it deserves.

Modernization

Modernization is another significant challenge to preserving Igorot culture. With the influence of Westernization and globalization, traditional practices, beliefs, and customs of the Igorot people have been replaced or forgotten. This is evident in the decline of traditional dress, music, and dance, which are important elements of Igorot culture. The younger generation may not have the same appreciation and understanding of their cultural heritage, as they are more exposed to Western culture and lifestyles.

The lack of support and recognition from the government is also a challenge in preserving the cultural heritage of the Igorot people. According to a study by Oyongan and Sotto (2020), the government has not given enough attention and resources to support the preservation of indigenous culture, including that of the Igorot people. This is despite the existence of laws and policies that aim to protect and promote the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples in the Philippines. The lack of government support has led to the deterioration of cultural heritage sites and the loss of traditional knowledge and practices.

Initiatives to Preserve Igorot Culture

To address the challenges in preserving Igorot culture, initiatives that aim to promote and preserve their cultural heritage should be supported. For example, the use of modern communication tools can be leveraged to showcase and promote Igorot culture. The project overview mentioned earlier outlines the importance of using digital content such as videos, blogs, and social media campaigns to provide a more accurate and inclusive representation of Igorot culture. This can help address the lack of recognition and representation of the Igorot people in national discourse and promote the preservation of their cultural heritage.

Moreover, cultural tourism can also be an effective way to promote and preserve Igorot culture. According to a study by Biteng et al. (2020), cultural tourism can provide economic opportunities for indigenous communities while also promoting cultural preservation. By showcasing their cultural heritage to tourists, indigenous communities can generate income that can be used to support the preservation of their cultural heritage. Cultural tourism also encourages the younger generation to take pride in their cultural heritage, as they become aware of the importance and value of their cultural practices.

In conclusion, the challenges faced by the Igorot people in preserving their cultural heritage are significant but can be addressed through various initiatives. The lack of recognition and representation of the Igorot people in national discourse, modernization, and the lack of government support are among the challenges that need to be overcome. By leveraging modern communication tools and promoting cultural tourism, the Igorot people can promote and preserve their cultural heritage for future generations to appreciate and understand.
